Christ did not promise His disciples comfort. He promised them courage. To follow Him meant walking into opposition with hearts anchored in faith.
The words of Jesus here are among the hardest to hear. The gospel brings peace to the soul but division to the world, for not all will receive it. Loyalty to Christ sometimes draws a line even within families.
Christ prepared His disciples to bear witness not just in the synagogues of their own people, but in the palaces of the mighty. The gospel was never meant to remain small. It was to confront the pride of kings and the policies of empires.
